Bettas have individual personalities, so one may get along perfectly with your other fish, but another may not. The only other fish they absolutely shouldn't be kept with are other bettas. Guppies, since they have long fins which resemble a betta's, and gouramis, to which bettas are related, may also be bad choices, although some people have kept these together successfully. You also want to avoid anything large enough to eat them, or aggressive species and fin-nippers.

It doesn't sound to me like you're keeping any fish that are definitely out, I would just use caution, and have another small tank handy if you need to move the betta.

As far as space, you'll have enough room for the betta, as well as some other fish (don't follow the 1 inch per gallon "rule" this has long been outdated, and was appropriate to use with very few species). I would suggest adding about 2-3 more danios (these are schooling fish) and another 1-2 otos (also schooling). You'd still have room for the betta and neons. If your tank is a 20 long rather than a 20 tall, (30 vs 24 inch length), you could probably add even more neons - I'd go around 8-9 total to make an even more impressive school.

Otos are schooling fish. You need a few more for them to be happy. Neons are a sensitive species and aren't as hardy as others. They don't always last long in the hard water preferred by danios and platies. A betta should get along fine with these species assuming you don't get a really aggressive betta. The platies will do more damage to the betta's fins than the betta will do to them.

you can put them in there unless some fish don't like the male betta fish or if any fish aren't compatible with your current fish.
Since i have one, i have mine alone because i only have a 2 gallon tank.check your pet pharmacist and ask if they go well together. it's hard for them becuase of the food. some fish of yours might eat different food from your other fish so some of the new and/or old fish might die. they like frozen food like frozen bloodworms dried. 1-2 times a day. and if they don't eat it in 3-5 minutes, take the food out and wait a day and give him another varatie of food to keep your fish healthy. they might attack another fish becuase they can b aggresive. sometimes they like small spaces without any fish around and sometimes they like big places for space and to swim about. use this betta essential product that helps your tank become good for your fish after you have cleaned your water and tank. 1 cap of it would be perfect since it's more than 2 gallons. they like caves to hide in and stay there. they will like a rock as big as them so they can swim next to it and stay there.

if they are sick you will know by their lack of diet, not active or alert and if you see fugus on their bodies or mouth. if you see the opposite they are perfect.

I think you'll have enough room for a betta. Bettas are only aggressive towards their own kind or anything that looks similar to them so don't listen to anyone that says bettas will kill all your fish. They can live with many other fish.

Be careful of Siamese fighting fish in an already well populated tank. There is a reason why they are sold in those cups at the pet store. If the Siamese doesn't have enough room for "his territory" he may take it out on the other fish. At least, that has been my experience. Good Luck!

They are aggressive fish as mentioned, but if you really want to get one, hey, it's your tank. Just be prepared for loses. To try and hopefully lessen the loss, just try and provide more cover for your other fish (plants, decorations). With a 20g tank, there should be more than enough space for all of your fish.

They are aggressive and it's not suggested for you to keep them with a community of fish, unless you are willing to accept possible dead fish.
