I have kept hermit crabs for years, they are relatively easy to care for pets. They need a pinch of hermit crab food each day. Also, they need a shallow pool with water and a sea sponge, so they don't drown. You need to bathe them every other day, to keep their gills wet, other wise, they will die. To bathe them, you fill a wide cup or bowl with lukewarmdistilled water. Place them inside of it upside down, it flushes out the shell this way, and count to ten. Leave them in a maximum of 15 seconds, otherwise, they may drown. Let them dry before placing them back inside of thier house. And don't forget, change their food and water each day, and they CANNOT DRINK TAP WATER. It has to be distilled, other wise, it could kill them. Everyother week, you are supposed to give them salt water, buy it from the pet stroe, and put that in there everyother day along with the regular water, offer it the same way, on the opposite side of the habitat. You can also give them fruits and veggies, such as banana, lettuce, coconut, anything citrus. Mine also loved peanut butter, that was his favorite food of all time, but only offer it as a treat, every other day at the most. They can also eat cheerios, although, those were never a big hit with mone. They should be housed in pairs, a they are herd animals, they live in groups. They should be housed in a 10 gallon aquarium, this is a good size and they need some furnishings for the inside to. To put inside, you will need, a shallow water dish, shell dishes to provide food in, a sea sponge for humidity, something to climb on such as choya wood[always a hit], wire climbing toys, those fake palm trees, extra shells, so your crabby can change homes, make sure the openings are only slightly larger than the shell they have now, provide at least 2, they like to have options. For the substrate, you will probably want to use coconut fibers, they are moist, and provide a good burrowing substrate, if not coconut fibers, you can use sand, or gravel, although the crabs don't like those as much. You want temperatures between 75 and 85 degrees, anything less, they will become dormant, more they will fry. After you have all of this, you can add on extras. Min like to hide in those plastic hamster igloos, and hamster and bird toys. Bird toys are especially good if they are made of thick, textured rope, wood and rawhide, they can be climbed and chewed by your crabs. Enjoy your crabs and good luck, they will provide you with hours of enjoyment. They can live for 20+ years if properly cared for.
