Get a long range WIreless router/Access point for your Friend's Network. Connect it to the cablemode. See if the signal reached your house...You may need to get a range boosting antenna for your PC and your frients Wireless router/WAP.

No need to use radius authentication. Simply encrypt the signal using WPA with a preshared key. Avoid WEP for encryption, It is easily hacked and for somereason maked obtaining an IP address from DHCP diffucult for certain Intel Centrino based Wireless NIC's

You will need a router, with the antenna connected to a strong 90 degree wall mount outdoor antenna booster. Those are available online. For that range, a signal repeater would work even better about midway, if there was anyway to do it.
I set up a wi-fi hotspot in a remote area, using satellite internet, an outside 180 degree hi-gain antenna, and 2 repeaters, with pole mounted hi-gain omni-directional antennas hooked to each. Worked like a charm, and covered about 7 acres worth of buildings. Strong signal even in bedrooms of cottages, even with some tree obstruction.
Hawkingtech has some really good prices, and high quality stuff. I got everything I needed from them in one order, and they were very helpful on the selection to fit my needs, also on the setup, as it was my first one on that scale.

How can it be considered stealing if your friend is sharing?

Are there people in between you and he? You could set up a mesh grid like what the use in the OLPC machines.

You Can't.

Why don't you just get your own.
