Telling a white lie is one facet of humoring someone, out of tolerance for their naiveté. Example: "Yes, Virginia, there IS a Santa Claus."
Another aspect is that you just don't want to bother, it's not worth it. As in, "No, those jeans do NOT make your butt look big."
Still another situation is when the person you are humoring has power over you, as in, "Yes, boss, that was a great idea you had. Now how about that raise?"
Probably I could think of more examples, but one last one: When you fear that not humoring someone might provoke their anger.

we lack the compassion and kindness as human beings to say what we mean in a way which is harmless, but at the same time designed to tell the other person exactly what our feelings are. So, we choose to make a joke, humor them, and otherwise let them know we have no capacity as a human being to be a soul which is on the same journey they are on. We in effect deny their humanity as we are unsure about ours. . Humor was always easier then the truth. Truth demands we first look at ourselves without cringing and after we have accepted the truth about our spirit, we can compassionately, and without our ego being tangled up in the answer tell our brothers and sisters what we believe the truth is. However, the truth as we perceive it may be anything but. So, in the end the only choice we have is to be infinitely forgiving and accepting.
An impossibly difficult choice at which I almost always fail and choose humor as easy way out.

An awful lot of people hate the truth of matters, I think it may be called delusional, although I think we can all feel a bit deluded about stuff at times.
However, I think most real people like humour because it's good to be light hearted and friendly as opposed to taking yourself so seriously and to be rather stuck up.
Now actually, I think we can all be a bit stuck up at times, but classy people have good manners and know when humour ends and nasty begins.

Usually because we know that they can't cope with the truth. Some people might humor them to avoid seeing a bad reaction from them too, I suppose.

I would rather know the truth than to have someone humor me, even if it's an answer that I don't want to hear, I'd rather know and get it over with!!

When people ask us something, they really don't want to know the truth;too painful for them and they can't handle it, so we humor them along. Also, if people are really ridiculous, it's funny just to see what lengths they will go to.
