supplies is ejected horizontally backward with a speed of 14 m/s relative to the helicopter. Ignoring air resistance, what is the horizontal distance between the package and the helicopter when the package hits the ground?

Start by determining how much time , T, before package hits the ground.
Using S=UT +0.5AT**2
U=initial vertical velocity = zero
A = accel due to gravity = 9.8 m/sec**2
S = distance = 17m

so
17 = 0.5 * 9.8 * T**2
T = SQRT(34/9.8) = 1.863 secs

Horizontal rate of separation = 14m/sec.

As we can ignore wind resistance, this rate does not change, so horizontal separation when package impacts the ground = 14* 1.863 = 26.082 M

The previous answer got the time correct, but didn't multiply that by the rate at which the chopper and package were separating.

You have two problems. In the horizontal direction, Hd = vo * t(fall), where
Hd is the distance between the package and the point is was "ejected" with respect to the ground. Since it is ejected in the opposite direction to the direction of flight, its velocity WITH RESPECT TO THE GROUND is 14-8 = 6 meter/second. To find t(fall), we address the vertical direction problem where
17 m = 4.9 m/sec^2 * t(fall)^2
t(fall)^2 = 3.4 sec^2 [all numbers are appx]
t(fall)= 1.85 sec
So Hd = 6* 1.85 = 11.3 m

Write out each and every of the correct equations. Helicopter: horizontal velocity = 8.a million horizontal place = 8.1t equipment: horizontal velocity = -10 horizontal place = -10t vertical accelration = -9.8 vertical velocity = -9.8t vertical place = -4.9(t^2) + 17 The equipment hits the floor while the vertical place = 0. So locate the t while which this happens. Then placed that t into the helicopter place and the equipment horizontal place, and the version between them is the horizontal distance between the two while the equipment hits the floor.

The package will hit the ground directly below the helicopter.
