Interesting question. I think it depends upon which history you are talking about. The catholic church is the father of western history. They destroyed anything they found which disagreed with their viewpoint. Also, the mongols had a hand in it when they burned the library at Alexandria. Western history is a patchwork where actual history is glued together with stuff conveniently made up.

Though Herodotus (Greek historian born ca. 484 BC) is uniformly accorded the title "the father of history", there is no such agreement on who deserves the title "the father of MODERN history" .

Here are a number of candidates who have been suggested, based on various important contributions to 'how we do history':

THUCYDIDES c. 455/460 B.C.-c. 399 B.C.
Greek historian.
Thucydides' reputation as a primary historian of the ancient world derives from his one work, the History of the Peloponnesian War.

PHILIPPE DE COMMINES (c. 1445 - c. 1511), French historian, chamberlain to Louis XI

FRANCESCO GUICCIARDINI (1483 - 1540) -Italian historian and statesman (during the Italian Renaissance), friend of Machiavelli. Given title based on his use of government documents to verify his "History of Italy."(Storia d'Italia)

GIAMBATTISTA VICO (1668-1744) of Naples, Italian philosopher, historian, and jurist.

For his book New Science (1725), overlooked at the time, but rediscovered early in the 19th century (thus sharing influence with vonRanke, below)

VOLTAIRE (penname for Francois-Marie Arouet, 1694-1778)

"because he was the first to conceive of history as the total interpretation of the customs and manners of past civilizations. His history was evaluative as well as descriptive"
[only instance I find of his being so labeled is this link]

LEOPOLD VON RANKE (1795-1886)

invented the historical seminar in which he directed his students in direct investigation of PRIMARY SOURCE material
