laptops were called laptops when they were first invented... down the line to make em more appealing for consumers the term Notebook came into use to make people think that they are small or light as notebooks. They are both terms for portable computers which are called laptops or notebooks.

I don't think there is a difference, it's just the way people like to call it. But some might say a notebook tends to be more portable, while a laptop is more like a desktop replacement, but people nowadays use both terms to their liking.

notebooks are smaller and more compact than laptops. they also have less memory and video and music capacity.
