The term 'cat', referring to a man, most probably came from the Beat Generation of the late 40's and early 50's, the young people too young to be drafted into WWII, who were the beginning of the counter-culture. One of their ways to rebel was to embrace jazz music, mostly segregated at the time. They also created their own slang, dubbing good jazz musicians with the compliment, 'cool cat'. It's usage spread to include any black man who comes across as 'smooth' or 'cool', and, eventually, any such man. And also condensed to just 'cat'.
I suppose thugs fancy themselves, and each other, as cool, though I'd have to disagree. What I'd like to know is, how can one be a 'cat' and a 'dawg' at the same time? :)
