the topic is "What is a specific incident or issue when America did not live up to at least 1 of its ideals/values identified in the American Dream. Teacher I can't use the civil rights movement as a whole, but can use a specific issue/incident within the movement.

Try the Japanese internment camps.
Better yet, how about the government's inability to control the border?
How about Affirmative Action and how it racially discriminates against whites?

How about looking at things like the Freedom Riders and the sit ins. Their specific elements of the Civil Rights Movement. Also, what about the desegragation of Little Rock Central High School as a possible topic.

During WWII the US Government interned Japanese - Americans in concentration camps. If you are looking for something more recent then research the detainees in Cuba from Iraq and Afghanistan. They have been there for years without the option of lawyers or due process. Good Luck!

U.S. Patriot Act, this act does not protect people who are Middle Eastern from being questioned, detained, or deported and it is discrimiated against there life, liberty, pursuit of happiness and many other things. Give that one a try if nothing else comes to thought
