definitely 6. 4 string is actually a bass guitar. Or else it a ukulele, which is for Hawaiian music. Which is fine, of course, but it's just a very specific niche of music whereas the 6 string is more broadly used.

I recommend a 6 string nylon classical acoustic guitar, as that is easier on the fingers than a traditional acoustic w/ metal strings. Electric guitars are very easy on the fingers as well, but there is a higher up front investment (amplifier, cords, pedals, etc.) which might not be prudent for someone just beginning.

i started my son on a bass easier to learn and qicker to get into bands and go from there he is now both a good lead guitarist and really good bassist, so a variety doesnt hurt, but 6 string will hold your interest, ok you can get more frm it when learning alone and also build a base for a four string bass guitar, in lkearning the 6 strings.
start with a good epiphone, if you can or go to pawn shops and look around before buying even yard sales have a few around but people are wise to the worth of old guitars now so you likely wont find an old pre cbs fender jazz master for ten dollars anymore either b ut worth looking ok

a 4-string guitar is probably a bass (though they make 5- and 6-string basses) and a 6-string with a shorter neck is a guitar.

try hitting a pawn shop, classifieds or mom-and-pop store to see if there's anything affordable. i found my acoustic (a pretty nice Washburn) at a pawn shop in Peoria, IL and paid $125 for the guitar, hard shell case, strap, capo and a set of strings.

6 string, but a used one. If you wind up disliking the guitar, you won't have sunk a ton of money into it, and once you know how to play it and like it, sell the used one and buy a new one. That is just a suggestion.

6 string
never get a 4 string, nobody uses them
If your just starting out, don't care too much about quality, and don't have much money to burn, go with a squire, they are pretty much made for beginners
If it's an acoustic your looking for, go with a yamaha. They make cheap, decent souding guitars also very good for beginners.
Good luck!

get a six-string used guitar. I would get either an Epiphone les Paul, a fender Stratocaster, or a Fender Telecaster. These are all good electric guitars that are relatively cheap.

Well, that depends.

If you're learning to play BASS guitar, then you want to start with a four-string bass. You don't want to complicate things.

If you're learning to play REGULAR guitar, then the fewest number of strings you can get is six. Start there....again, you don't want to complicate things by adding strings.

Have Fun with it!

I had a talk to the Bass Gods and they think you should play guitar! It has been chosen for you, it is decided, it is done!
