Shan, it is a scary world we live in and especially, for the babies and the elderly!
Our children are under so much pressure today and with all the political issues they are inundated with...how can they stay positive? I agree with you about what kind of world in which we now live.
As a hobby, geology, is one of my favorite hobbies! In as much, I understand much about what is happening to our planet. This trend of warming is very natural as we have ice ages and warming trends! These are validated through core samples. I have seen them and I can tell you that yes, the pollution and such does play a role but, it is not the main conductor! The earth is! The entire Al Gore, panic mode, is only one sided! If he were to get togather the greatest of minds pertaining to the earth and the trends it goes through, we would all have a clearer picture! There would not be any reason for people to fear. There would be much more understanding as to how we could cut out much of our hastening these naturally ocurrances.

What worries me is the amount of time and attention given to the effect humans are having on global warming as though a change in our habits could stop it happening. Human activity contributes a tiny amount to the increase in CO2 in the atmosphere and in any case CO2 is not the major greenhouse gas and there is no evidence that an increase in CO2 is the cause of global warming. While I agree that we should do everything to conserve energy made from fossil fuels I think more time and attention should be given to what the effects of global warming will be and what we can do to deal with those effects. There have been times in the past when the earth was warmer than it is now before humans started to use fossil fuels so we must be able to get some evidence of the conditions what existed then. For instance the polar bears did not apparently die out as we are now told they will if we don't switch a light off.

Yes it is scary to think about how we have allowed the pursuit of temporary nominal grain for a few to endanger OUR life support system via man's contribution to the Changing Climate (it is not just warming) from pollution of sea & air; plundering of eco-systems; changing land use; urbanization and the burning of fossil fuels.
Society is based on lies such as pollution is needed to make a profit, profit creates wealth -despite a sale can only be made to a person with the money to buy, prices reflect true cost, and there is not enough for everyone
It does not have to be this way.
We all create the world we experience by the choices we take.
Our actions may appear small by themselves yet when combined can produce momentum to change the world - remember the principled actions of one man -Gandhi, ended the English Empire.
By only buying products from non polluters we can force business & thus the State to move to benefit all instead of just those who control prices. By learning how to choose the right ways to true education we will be empowered to live our own life's dreams.

It's a worry. Unfortunately, we have passed the point of no return.
The politicians and large companies were warned years ago, and did nothing. Mostly, on their part, for greed and monetary gain. Most of them have high stake in the major companies that contributed to this. So to get bigger bank accounts they turned a deaf ear.
But we can get more pro-active about it and keep up to date, to see if they are really keeping at least, some of the promises, and 'so called' agreements made.
If they don't we must shout louder, and don't vote for the ones that have these big stakes.
I mention, Cheney, the whole Bush family, Rumsfield, Blair, John Howard and a host of others.
We need to do background checks on what companies these people were or are involved with, before we so innocently believe everything they say they will do. Before we give them our vote.
Don't forget they control the media too. And there are some very rich families who control them too. Rothschilds, USA and European branch. Rockefellers.
Good link below. Also check on the top ten richest families in the world. See the companies they own. There are many sites on the net. One just has to research.

Inthedark has it about right, though he still has mud on his wellies. Yes global warming is occurring and has been for several thousand years (we now know) our ancestors were aware of it but accepted it as a natural course of nature. We (Man kind) have adapted to all the past changes I do not see why we should not adapt into the future, there will be upheaval and people are going to be uncomfortable, but to think that there is any thing we can do about it is totally arrogant. We need to spend the money being wasted on global warming on some thing us full like getting of this planet and spreading our contagion through out the known universe.

There's more at work here than you've been led to believe by the scaremongers. A great majority of the climate changes have been wrought by sun activity.
Evolution is what happens to make an animal (or person) adapt to its environment, and if these changes are slow enough, the body will adapt.
Perhaps the worst thing you can do is make the children afraid. Let them be carefree just as you were. There honestly is nothing that you can do to change the future.

Interestly, as a child, I learned about the ice age. People then were worried about another ice age. The earth has been changing since it was created. Africa used to be attached to North America/Central and South America. The coastal areas of the US used to go out further. The earth is ever changing, it was before "global warming" and will continue to do so, There used to be the continent of Atlantis
Some Islands have disappeared, some Islands are cropping up. Scientists have analysed the earth and found that 300 years ago there was a very active hurricane season.
I am not worried the earth has been evolving since its birth,

I do not think that the world is any worse or better than it as ever been. it is just that we have more information nowadays, most of it wrong ( some authorities think over two thirds of data on the Internet is incorrect) for instances our children are less likely to be harmed outside the home nowadays than they were some years ago but you try telling that to the average Mum who is bombarded with images which tell her otherwise global warming is happening but why is the big question?

The Polar Ice cap melting scares me: If the polar bears die, the seals multiply and kill off whatever it is that they eat and that affects some other food source. This seems to me like the ultimate Domino Effect. I am (obviously) not a zoologist, but these events are surely monumental and deadly to our descendants.
Has this happened before , with such global impact?
To answer your question, yes, I worry, and hope we can figure something out soon.
Peace.

It's still a free and easy life as anyone living under bridges and along railroad tracks will testify. It all depends on what you call free and easy. Where I live we usually have triple digit summers that last about 3 months and are unbearably miserable. Now we are having cooler summers so it is more like spring and the winters are mild. I can live with this for a very long time if need be.
