I'm doing a map from my house to school. And according to google maps,I live 1.8 miles away.My teacher wants us to do a scale per inch. So I measured how far I live from the school and I got 14 1/2 inches. Should I divide 1.8 by 14 1/2...? or what? Please help.

you have 14.5in=1.8 miles
so 1 in=1.8/14.5=0.12 miles ans

Plan a: You could do a map where one inch on the map equals one mile. Then your house would be 1.8 inches away from the school on the map.

Plan b: You could do a map where one inch equals one half mile. Then your house would be 3.6 inches away from school on the map. I think that this would fit nicely on a standard piece of paper.

Where did the 14.5 inch figure come from? is that just the length of the paper?

Divide 14 1/2 by 1.8 and that should give it to you in miles per inch.

well. if this map is going to take up one whole standard page of paper. what you really need to do is just look at a ruler and look at how much room you have to work with. then, come up with a good scale. like if you are using a whole page for the map. make 1/2inch=.1 mi so that would make one inch=.2 mi which is a good scale and start drawing on that. but its all decision making really. no special math involved.

No, do the opposite. Divide 14.5 by 1.8. That should give you the right scale.
