I would really like a Chinese Water Dragon, but I've about their care and it seems like its difficult. Is the care difficult? Overall, do they make satisfying pets?

Thanx for any help

I wouldn't recommend the CWD as a first reptile. I say this because I own Crested Geckos and I owned a CWD. Now, keep in mind that my CWD wasn't in the best of health when I got him, but he did die within a few months. I was hoping I could nurse him back to health but it was like pulling teeth trying to get him to eat. Even without him being sick, there was a lot of work involved. Humidity, heating, UV lighting etc. Also, from what I understand, a lot of CWDs in pet stores are wild caught, and therefore could carry a number of parasites or diseases that might not be outright noticable.

I recommend the Crested Gecko as a first time reptile. It was mine, and I still can't get enough of them to this day. I own 7 now, with hatchlings on the way. They are great little guys :) I've owned snakes, CWDs etc and nothing really compares. Look into it, you might enjoy them.

We have owned a Chinese water dragon now for about a year and a half and I can't wait to get another. We have really enjoyed our dragon, he's fun to watch and relatively easy to maintain. I think the best advice is to do your research before going out and making your purchase, many websites and books will tell you what to look for in a healthy dragon. From personal experience I would avoid buying your dragon from one of the large corporate pet stores, if you have a reptile store near by that would be a better place to go, they are more specialized and should be able to give you all sorts of helpful information. This is the first reptile we've owned and I think he's been relatively easy to care for. Good luck and enjoy if you do decide to own a water dragon.

A couple good books to read are:
Green Water Drangons by Phiippe de Vosjoli &
Water Dragons by Bert Landerwerf

I would not say that they are a bad choice, but you need to be aware of the care involved. The care is not difficult but time consuming. you need to be consistent with it on a daily basis. They have heat and humidity needs that can be hard to keep depending on the cage. They should have a large upright cage as an adult. They do make great pets and normally have good attitudes towards humans.
It sounds like you are doing research before you buy, thats great, keep it up. Only You can decide if you can and are willing to give this animal the level of care and time it needs

they're very awesome pets, but i don't think they're for beginners, the experience level required should be intermediate, meaning that you've owned about 3-5 reptiles before and that you've done lots of research on some reptiles, their care is not difficult, and they do make satifying pets, but if you really want it you should get it i own a reptile and it's experience level was intermediate but i didn't care about that i went ahead and bought it, it was a desert horned lizard, so if want it, get it.

Hope i helped!!!!

If you do your research and can supply for their specific needs, they make very nice pets. Read the care sheets on this website to see if you can do it.
