My wife and I are moving across the country less than two months after we have our first child. We are considering buying a portable crib or a bassinet instead of a regular crib for the first couple of weeks.

When we went to look at portable cribs, the mattress seemed pretty flimsy compared to the regular cribs. Would it be safe for a newborn to sleep in a portable crib for that long? Should be try to find something with a firmer mattress --like a bassinet or a regular crib?

It's fine. If you get a pack 'n play that's new, most of them come with a bassinet setting which will be raised higher, anyway. There's nothing wrong with it. A lot of families have them and keep them in the living room while the crib is in the baby's room and the bassinet is in the parents' room. It's just a place for newborns to sleep that's on the main floor of the house--no big deal. Especially if your baby's only going to use it for a few weeks. Just make sure to buy a couple sets of sheets for it in case of spit up or diaper leaks.

Look at the weight limits for your specific brand. My 10 month old still sleeps in his pack n play when we travel and probably will for quite a bit longer. He is 20+ pounds and fits more then fine. I'm sure a 6 month old is fine as long as he can't pull up and fall out or anything.

The bassinet should'nt hurt for a short time. Many parents use a bassinet for the 1st few weeks of a new born any way.

when at my parents house we use a portable crib and my son is fine in it. it just might be uncomfortable. the bassinet we had only held up to 15lbs and the portable crib at my moms only holds to 25lbs.
