Could be your memory or your hard drive.

Go to the motherboard manufacturer's website-you'll need to know the make and model of the motherboard. You can check the manual there, and find the jumper on the motherboard to clear the nvram (non-volatile random access memory located on the CMOS chip-contains BIOS-basic input/output system-instructions for your hardware). Typically, you'll move the jumper over by one set of pins, wait a moment, then move the jumper back.

You can also try booting with all pci cards (including video card), drives and memory removed. If you get a different error-like a series of beeps, then start by putting the RAM memory back in, then the video card, then the hard drive, rebooting after each replacement. If the machine boots after putting the hard drive back in, one of your pci cards is bad.

If it's hanging at the 'Checking NVRAM' message, then it has found a problem with the RAM, big or small it makes no difference, BIOS by default will stop on any error.

Have your RAM checked at a reputable shop, and consider replacing it if necessary.

something is wrong with the RAM if it is stuck in BIOS checking NVRAM.
