Hi, there. A very effective yet very simple deodorizer can be made by warming a little bit of water on the stove and then adding 5-10 drops of Lemongrass essential oil. (Please contact me directly if you'd hints on where to purchase Lemongrass essential oil cheaply.) Let the water remain on the burner for a few hours, but make sure it doesn't burn dry. If you have a diffuser, Lemongrass eo can also be used in the diffuser. Do this every-other day for a week and it should eliminate the odors. If odors remain, blend 1/4 c. Lemongrass eo with 1 cup high proof vodka. Let the bottle sit for a week or so, shaking the bottle daily. This is non-staining and can be sprayed on the carpets and in the air vents to remove the odors. An added bonus is that it's also a good antibacterial spray. Good luck!!!!

You can rip up the carpets & replace and repaint
OR
sprinkle the carpets with baking soda, let sit. Then vacuum. If that doesn't get the smell out, wash the carpets with a 50/50 solution of water and vinegar.
Also, using a sponge, wipe down all the walls and doors with the same solution. Ceilings if you can reach them, also.
Use gloves, as straight vinegar is a weak acid.
And any appliances they left (refrig, stove)

Usually cooking and smoking odors tend to stick to fabric. Try shampooing your carpet by renting a rug doctor at your local walmart or grocery store. They are quite efficient and get the dirt out. If you have curtains, take them down and wash them out. Also, let the whole place air out by opening your doors and windows and spraying some febreeze or renuzit.

Use a degrease to clean the floors and clean the walls, paint the walls and ceiling. Do not use any baking soda or deodorant of any kind(just a waste of money). trying to cover one Oder with another is only temporary and a waste of time and money.
