He has basically given you his heart in a material form. It's supposed to represent a promise that the two of you will, one day, spend the rest of your lives together. It takes a long time for guys to make this decision. It's not something we do all the time. It is very sincere and is supposed to make you feel special and incredibly loved. If you feel the same way, maybe you should do the same thing for him in order to return the feelings. Maybe a special necklace that means a lot to you or another ring. Your choice. I hope the best for the two of you.

It is a promise to get engaged down the line.
Basically it is a material statement that you plan to make this relationship a serious, long-term thing, resulting in marriage.
