If you have friends that have websites which are indexed and especially if they are similar in nature to yours, have them place a link to your site.
Otherwise you have to promote your site.
Participate in forums, publish articles, start a blog etc. and always place the full address of your website in your signature just as I have done below.
Eventually Google will find your site and index it.
I have found that submitting your site to Google makes little difference in the time that it takes to be indexed.
Better let them find you because your site is popular and interesting.

Although if you want your web site to appear on Google you have to pay a small price. Sometimes the web hosting provider will choose the most popular web site and will choose to put it on google for free. They ask you first for your permission. If you do you will also need to put in a bio about your site and some other info. It will only take about five minutes.

if you post an ad in craigslist.com (its free to post) and place your website in it as a link (using html), it will be indexed by google within 24 hours.
