O.K. definitely. My brother has bi-polar and my sister and I have always have to deal with depression. My great grandfather and some of his sons had depression too and killed themselves. Alchohol abuse - my husband and his siblings are all alchoholics as there parents were and they inherited the gene. Of course, I am now concerned about my 3 sons but as I am not alchoholic and don't drink and pray against the spirit of alchoholism then I think that they may have a chance. Hope so!

Social factors – Certain social or environmental stressors may also contribute to mental illness. These may include life events such as moving to a new place or divorce and chronic feelings like low self-esteem, loneliness, or anger.
Drug and alcohol abuse many factors play a part: Genetics, Personality, Learned Behaviors, Cultural, Social or Environmental Factor

though an obvious factor would be constantly growing up and being surrounded by e.g. parents doing drugs or alcohol or even sometimes living with someone with a mental illness can cause u to become severly depressed then lead to yourself gettin mentally ill...

Depression does run in in families. What I do notice that often their food intake is not so healthy neither, before they become depressed. And I wonder or that has something to do with it.
Think about this , In Europe during the 2nd world war hardly nobody was depressed. Everybody was just thinking about survival.
I also notice people who concentrate on others than themselves hardly get depressed.
