In my opinion the best book is Murphy, "Technical Analysis of the Financial Markets". Not cheap. But, it is an in-depth discussion of every single technical indicator and method used, presented without any opinion attached. No product to sell, no favorite system hyped. Good solid work. There are others, but this is the best universal reference.

Read some books on technical analysis of the stock markets.
Select, backtest and adjust the rules to meet your tolerance
of risk taking. Some traders like the candlestick rules.
Look for stocks that have met these criteria.
1) have held their most of value when the market goes down
2) stock price increases when the market goes up.
3) The market is starting an uptrend.
4) the stock price is starting an up trend.
Some traders use the running averages and MACD.
