My friend is having a pool party this weekend and I am menstrating right now and she really wants me to go. My mom doesn't feel I am ready for Tampons because they can cause TSS. Is it okay for me to go swimming even though I am, or is it safer not to?

It is perfectly fine. TSS is very rare and occurs when people do not use tampons correctly - for example, the most recent case I saw in the news said the girl never removed old tampons, just put in new ones - the doctors removed 4!

It is normal to be nervous when trying tampons for the first time. The key is to be relaxed about it. Do not wait until the day of the pool party to try it for the first time. Ask your mom to go with you and help you pick out a brand targeted for teens. Go home, read the directions carefully, and relax by yourself in the bathroom or your bedroom. Wear one for a few hours to get used to it, and to get used to taking one out and putting one in. Get the kind that you can match to your flow - light or heavy and only use the highest you need. Good Luck and have fun swimming!

Tampons only cause TSS if you leave them in for more than 8 hours. You should not swim while on your period WITHOUT a tampon, but it's not "unsafe," just gross. Would you want to swim with someone else who was bleeding into the water? The answer should be no. Be considerate of your friends and their parents pool. If you aren't going to wear a tampon, don't go swimming.

You MUST wear tampons or NO swimming!

You will bleed into the pool as your period does NOT stop nor does it slow down when you are in the water, it only gets dispersed and looks like it slows down or stops.

Is safe as long as you don't leave the tampon in after you get out of the pool. If you swim again..change it again.
Don't let it control your life.

You really cannot swim during your period, unless you use something internal (tampon, Instead SoftCup, DivaCup) to prevent outflow.

Messiness aside, you cannot expose others to your blood--it's not safe for them.

TSS is far less of a risk if tampons are worn for a short time. I bet your mother would have less trouble with your use of tampons, if she knew it would be limited to a few hours. (Wash your hands well before inserting---the risk is really minimal.)

when your on your period its like having an open wound in your vagina, so swimming may cause an infection from bacteria in the water
