I am thinking of auditioning for The Sound of Music, but before I do, I was wondering if they will even consider me for any of the main roles, since I am African American.

Thanks!

It really depends on the Director. Personally, I wouldn't cast you in this show. It is not a racist thing, but it is a race thing. I would be trying to be as true to the time as possible. The problem with this show is that it is based on real people from history.
I once saw a show with an African American as Lincoln and it didn't ring true. I also saw Caucasian playing the part of Othello and that also didn't work.
Why not approach the director and simply ask?

Some make-up books will actually go into how an African-American actor can do effective Caucasian make-up specifically for issues like this. If they are doing the play realistically, there would only be white people in the show; but if you have the desire and the talent, you should not be excluded before you start.
Asking is a good idea.

I don't know who They is, but in this day and age, the roles should go to the most qualified in the eyes of the directors. Race would only be a consideration if the show were being done in an historically accurate style. Most casting nowadays is color blind.
