While pictures from the Hubble space Telescope and the theories of cosmologists about black holes and the boundaries of the universe get all the attention and glamour, The science of Astronomy has always been a very practical one.
You don't really think that governments around the world spend billions of $'s just so that the public can enjoy the great pictures and the theorists can spin their great ideas?
99% of Astronomy is, and always has been, the accurate mapping and positioning of stars etc. for the purpose of accurate navigation, whether on the high seas or in space.
Where do you think the Global Positioning System gets it's reference for accurate position information? What do space probes use for guiding reference? Hundreds of years of ever more accurate information made worldwide navigation possible.
One look in a Nautical Almanac or treatise on Navigation will reveal thousands of tables on star positions to aid the navigator. Even though today most of them rely on GPS information, that info is based on the same tables. It just has been made available for use without doing the old fashion math needed to compute your position on earth.
