How do you open the mine(s)? I tried going to the excavation site after goods are collected like the guide said, but it didn't work...

I've had both with me every time..but when I go in nothing different happens..

Talk to Carter in the dig site/mine during the day, then after 10pm at night, go back to the mine with the hammer...
He (Carter) should come in after you and say something like "I've found a passage, but I need your help."
You will then open the first mine... to open the others you need to visit the last floor of the previous mine (10, 255, 999) IIRC

You have to enter the mine entrance after 9pm any evening. You have to have the hammer with you...BUT NOT EQUIPPED!
If your hammer is ready to use the even will not trigger. It must be in your rucksack.
To open the other mines, get to the bottom of the previous one, then repeat the process that opened the first mine.

You have to have the hoe and the hammer with you as well or it won't work.
