How was the decision to drop the atomic bomb on Nagasaki/Hiroshima a compromise in history?

it was a moral compromise of if you drop the bombs you are purposely targeting and killing many civilians but ending the war quickly. If you do not use the bomb, the war would probably dragged on another year or two, causing more American deaths, and possibly just as many deaths for the Japanese

Try taking a look at the number of lives that would have been lost in the planned invasion of the home islands. Not just American lives, but Japanese lives as well. The decision to drop the bomb was less to save Japanese lives and more to save American lives, but in comparison to how many died at Hiroshima and Nagasaki the toll would have been considerably higher.

Well it was either drop the A bombs or invade Japan.

The invasion of Japan was codenamed: "Operation Downfall" and it was estimated that millions of Americans and allies would have died to take those islands.

So dropping the two A bombs actually saved the lives of millions of Americans (and British, Australian, New Zealand, and other troops).

By dropping the first bomb, US showed Japan that US has this devastating weapon, and by dropping the second bomb, US stated that "we're not afraid to use it again,: despite the incredible amount of civilian deaths. I believe that this was the first time that US has actually targeted important government related facilities as well as civilians in a war.

They Were Trying To End The War

Harry S Truman said that he ordered it because he had an opportunity to end the war.
Later he said that it might not have been necessary for us to use the bomb if it had not been necessary for the Japs to bomb Pearl Harbor.
