I mail a lot of packages out to people and if anyone has a situation at their apartment where things can't be safely delivered, I ask for an alternate address.
I've had most say they'd prefer to have it delivered to them at their work address, or to their parents house, or to a friend's house where the mail won't be stolen.
You can always ask for the delivery to be made at a second address. It's very common.
