The reasons for Luther's success were not economic but spiritual. Like the rest of the world, Luther and Germany were living by rules that governed their lives. These rules kept the bulk of the population down, kept them living in fear of their salvation, the rich were also trapped.
Luther found the verse in the bible that said "The just shall live by faith". This meant that people became righteous by faith in God, not by giving money to the church, nor by keeping rules, nor by being christened or baptised (these cost money that the poor could not afford). Salvation was a free gift and was by faith alone.

This was liberating to the people of the day. The truth set people free as it still does today.
