i used to play this game as a kid and i really want to know the name of it.

There was a die with all the letters of the alphabet on it, and you rolled it to determine the letter. There was a time limit for writing down as many things that start with that letter for a certain category. Its kind of like boggle except that it's based off of a dice rather than a board of letters.

It's Scattergories. And it was a parlor game even before a game company made the dice and category lists and changed the name. It's a fun game and I wonder why it's not still around.

The oldest board video games have been fixed immediately on a skinny wood board, consequently the call "board pastime". Such video games are often fixed on cardboard or perhaps plastic at present, yet they have retained their previous call in spite of the incontrovertible fact that. - LJS
