Abuse "refers to the use or treatment of something (like a person) that is seen as harmful."

1) They're just women fighting for our country, right? Why should they have the same rights other US women have?:

-Last year nearly 3,000 military women reported sexual assault while on active duty. Part of the recommended regimen for treating survivors of assault is to inform them about and offer them emergency contraception, yet it is only sporadically available to servicewomen at their base pharmacies and medical facilities in the U.S. and overseas.

-In 2002, the Department of Defense initially added EC to its Basic Care Formulary, a list of over 200 medications required to be stocked at all military treatment facilities. Sadly, emergency contraception was quietly removed from the list weeks later, a result of ideological pressure from the Bush administration. Now, it is at the discretion of each health facility to decide whether or not to stock EC, and military women have no guarantee of universal access.

-Servicewomen deserve quality health care, including access to EC. In 2003, a survey financed by the Defense Department found that almost a third of all servicewomen reported being the victim of rape or attempted rape during their time in the Armed Services. Most women serving our country rely exclusively on military facilities for all their health care needs and restricting or denying access to emergency contraception is not only unhealthy and irresponsible but completely unjust.

2) In spite of what "society" says, women themselves say they are not treated fairly in the workplace:

- A recent survey conducted by the WAGE Project revealed that 70% of women reported unfair treatment in the workplace. More than half of these women say they continue to work under unfair conditions despite being aware of the inequality. The survey also found that working women rank equal pay as one of their greatest concerns along with the lack of affordable, quality child care and the lack of health care benefits. http://www.wageproject.org/content/news/#newsitem1177333401,57475,

-While US women wait for businesses and corporate leaders to treat them fairly, activists can help mobilize women and men in their community to support legislation for economic justice. The Paycheck Fairness Act (S. 766 and H.R. 1338), introduced by Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) and Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn.), aims to reduce the pay gap by enhancing enforcement of the Equal Pay Act, training enforcement officials, and permitting employees to share salary information with co-workers without punishment.

3) The Equal Pay Act exists, so why do women say they aren't being paid fairly? Everyone follows the law, right, especially large corporations:

a) In 2001, six women filed a class action suit against Wal-Mart on behalf of 1.6 million current and former female employees, alleging a pattern and practice of discrimination against women:

-Among many claims, the class action suit alleged that women were less likely to be promoted into management, even though they are the majority of lower-paid workers, that female managers were paid an average of $14,500 less than male managers, and that female hourly employees were paid an average of $1,100 per year less than male hourly workers. http://www.forbes.com/2004/06/23/cx_da_0623topnews.html

b) Women have filed a class action suit in federal court claiming sexual harassment and sex discrimination at Smith Barney:

-Branch Office Complaints from Coast to Coast:

Garden City, N.Y. — A former branch manager allegedly brandished a gun and used vulgar sexist slurs. The same manager has been accused of furnishing a "Boom Boom Room" where he served male brokers bloody marys and they joked about sexual harassment complaints.

Richmond, Va. — Women workers charge that a branch manager told women workers at a Christmas party he would pay them $100 if they took off their shirts.

Knoxville, Tenn. — Allegedly, a branch manager would say of women in the office that "she needs a good (expletive) and I can give it to her."

Kansas City, Mo. — A woman claims that her branch manager failed to direct accounts from departing brokers to her, while routinely giving such accounts to younger, less experienced male brokers.

Seattle, Wash. — A woman states that she found her job was cut when she returned from maternity leave.

No way. Our society makes a huge deal out of abuse of women. If a women is abused the guy is arrested immediately. If a man is abused, especially by a woman, reporting it will just get him laughed at and often times arrested.

How about all the women that get away with murder because of mental problems? Like Andrea Yates and Mary Winkler.

Yes, "suckerlongpimp." Look up the number of men prosecuted for murdering and/or raping prostitutes. Nonexistent. I can quote you some judges' remarks on the worthlessness of the life of the prostitute. Would you like that? Hmm?

I don't see many males being devalued and declared worthless and "OK to murder because they were just prostitutes" for sleeping around, do you?

"Do *I* have any evidence that our society ignores the abuse of women?"

Nope. Not a shred, sorry.

I could, however, point you to many references showing the absolute opposite of your query; that abuse of women is an absolute priority in today's society.

There have been laws against it for years. One of the reasons for prohibition was the link between alcohol abuse and domestic violence. Women have been "speaking out about it" for as long and as loud as they can for well over a century. When are they going to shut up about it is a more pertinent question. It is probably one of the least ignored issues in our society.
