9 - 2/11 = 8 9/11

you solved it wrong. You have to borrow from the 9 to make a fraction that you can subtract 2/11 from.

9 becomes 8 11/11
8 11/11 - 2/11 = 8 9/11

So you do division first which is 2/11. Then 9 - 2/11 = 8 9/11

9 - 2/11 is LESS than 9: you're SUBTRACTING a positive number, 2/11. Think of making change in 11ths! 9 is 8 + 1 = 8 + 11/11, so 9 - 2/11 = 8 + (11-2)/11 = 8 + 9/11.

9 - 2/11 = 8 9/11
The way this works is 9 can be written as 8 + 1 or 8 11/11
and 11/11 - 2/11 = 9/11
so 8 11/11 - 2/11 = 8 9/11
or 9 - 2/11= 8 9/11
hope this helps
