The state disability insurance (SDI) with the state you in live will cover 12 months if you pay it thru your payroll deduction. They don't pay all your bills, it pays out about 60% of your gross monthly income and that money is non-taxable. If you don't have SDI and you didn't buy any short term disability income insurance on your own, you are out of luck.

cut back on all unnecessary perks...like cell phones, satellite/cable, internet, eating out etc.
if you are married is your spouse working? if you only have a broken ankle you are able to take care of the kids ( you say family i am assuming you have kids ) so maybe your spouse can get a second job to get you guys past this money trouble.
wright down everything you spend money on in a month every dollar and i am sure you will be able to save alot....no more take out coffee,no more mcdonalds, movies rentals little things like this really add up to alot each month
look closely at your food bill only buy what you need not what you want..ie no name brand cereals, soda, papertowels, snack foods, etc
plan your meals on paper and only buy the food needed to make meals no extras. plan meals that will stretch...instead of everybody having tacos with sides make one huge salad for everyone with some cheap chix breast grilled marinated in a cheap southwest seasoning, spaghetti can be stretched a long way..make it with no meat just some veggies will be less money, chili easy and cheap, think big healthy and lasting for meals.
gas is expensive so only drive if you have too.
tap water no more bottle its the same thing anyways just put a jug of tap water in the frig
there are some temp jobs you can do with a broken ankle call temp agencies you might get lucky with desk work
good luck

You say your insurance doesn't pay past 90 days - if you are only out of work 6-8 weeks, that's only 42-64 days, far less than 90 days.

You mention not wanting to empty out your bank account. General advice is regularly given to have 6 months of takehome pay saved to cover emergencies. If you have savings, emergencies are one of the things those are for.

You may be able to get some kind of state assistance. But generally you are on your own. In the future you may look into AFLAC as addition insurance coverage. They give you money for living expenses but do not pay medical bills.
