Gosh not heard that expression for ages, my grandmother all ways use to say that .it means shocked by something you have just seen or heard .

Ahm tryin' to think ... aye, it worrabaht 'arf an hour ago. I were sittin' 'ere mindin' me own business, like, when all of a sudden a fall o' muck kem down t'chimney and all t'furniture, like, were covered in soot and our Bert, sat theyer on t'settle, ended oop black as the ace o' spades. I says, "Well, I'll go to the foot of our stairs!" And Bert says, "Aye, an' while yer theyer, you'd better fetch me a bucket to swill me 'ed in."

Mine had it's foot removed - gangrene I think!
"Summer" does the toilet in a strange place!
