with digital tv about to happen how can i tell if my tv is digital?

Check the TV's specifications (on the web or by reading the user manual).
If you have a decent antenna, check if you get any digital channels (2.1, 5.1, etc.). If you get digital channels, then it is definitely digital. If not, you really need to find its specs.
