In man mandible is the lower jaw.
In insects, there are two mandibles, each located dorsoventrally around the mouth opening. They constitute the mouth parts. In biting and chewing types of mouth parts( grasshopper, for example), they do the cutting of food.
In piercing and sucking type of mouth parts( mosquitoes, for example), they pierce the skin of the prey so that blood can ooze out.
