A tail is an extension of the spine, so it is very delicate.

A tail is usually used to help keep the balance of an animal so that it can sit on branches and such. This is why a cat can stand on such a narrow surface, and may be why they always land on their feet.

They have a tail because there is no reason not to have one, there are some people that are born with tails, it's not necessarily odd... We all used to have tails...

Based on the laws of physics, there are quadrupeds that need balance. Even tad poles start with tales, but if not needed for particular body structures, then the tail simply is not needed throughout evolution.

Humans start off looking like tad poles with a tail.

The dna gene message tells the cells to form a tail. The tails function I believe is balance.

there are so many reasons why they grow tails here are a few, balance, protection(from bugs mostly), lots of animals use it as a weapon there are more but i don't have that much time

For some like the cat and monkey it's for balance. Dog's i think just needed a tail to wag for us to see they are happy ?? lol

In my observation they use it for balance, some use it to swat flies and some use it as a blanket when they sleep.
