those are 2 VERY different questions.
moon, well, china's already planning and designing moon "tents" for nauts to live in for extended periods of time. They plan to use them in 2012 I think.
star... technically the sun is the nearest star and we have sent probes near it.......
the next closest star Proxima Centauri is 4.22 light years away, (24,807,799,074,835 miles)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proxima_Centauri
cbirch92 ---- Alpha Centauri is the "star SYSTEM" that proxima is located in
the fastest ship we have travels 30,000 mph (called New Horizons and on its way to pluto as we speak) it'll take about 10 years to travel 4 billion miles.
if that ship headed toward Proxima Centauri then it would take around 94398 years to get there......
sorry, but thats out of the question for now.
we must be able to travel the speed of light to make it feasible. even better we need to find out how we can apply quantum tunneling to solid objects.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quantum_tunneling
That way we might "possibly" "teleport" the ship from here to there instantly

Theres no reason to colonize the moon. Unless there is some economic reason to go there, the chances of more than an occasional visit are remote. What can you do on the moon that you can't do in space.
The technical difficulties involved in interstellar voyages are probably insurmoutntable. The stars are just too far. I just had a good quality expresso machine go bad after about 10 years. A voyage to the stars would probably last at least hundreds of years. Think of all the thousands of parts of such a vehicle that could go wrong. Failure of any of which could kill you. Think of the damage of hitting a piece of space debris the size of a grain of sand would do to a ship travelling at very high speeds. Think of the radiation emitted by these impacts.
People do not adapt very well to space either.
And when you get there, what then. Most likely you'll find absolutely useless real estate, very much like mars or venus.
Personally I doubt the ability of our technical civilization to survive for very long. So many interdependent technical systems rule our lives. One major disruption: economic, war, tectonic, epidemic.. and the whole thing could collapse.

Moon - within the next 75 years, I'd guess. The nearest star is the Sun - not sure why anyone would want to go there.

theres no point in living on the moon. its to much work for no reason.
as for the nearest star. i would give it another 100,000 years. because with our current technology it would take us 75,000 years just to travel to Alpha Centauri, which is the nearest star, and its 4.3 lightyears away. and it also takes very very careful planning to go that far. Alpha Centauri could have already become a red giant or gone supernova 4 years ago and we wouldnt even know about it yet. and they we have to find a place to land, and we dont know of any planets orbiting that star.
if we somehow got to the nearest star it would be a miracle.

Yes i will live on the moon some day, and many others will as well but it might take 25-30 years for any colonies to start showing up in any great numbers.

I keep in mind while Dan Goldin, NASA Administrator, proposed sending a probe to Alpha Centauri in a 1997 teleconference. As I keep in mind, I watched it on NASA television for the duration of NASA's elation of having merely landed the efficient Pathfinder undertaking on Mars employing the faster, extra useful, extra maximum budget friendly attitude. they ought to have felt something became achievable. very practically off-the-cuff, he mentioned something to the end result that "i choose choose college little ones to make certain photos from yet another celebrity device. in actuality, i circulate to make that an order. i circulate to tell my men that we can deliver a probe to Alpha Centauri in 25 years." it is obviously paraphrased and that i ought to have a number of it incorrect. yet I recommend to declare the undertaking became concocted out of a euphoric can-do suggestions-set quite than any ability to easily do it. I hadn't accompanied up on it and did no longer understand there became easily a undertaking in place. The quickest spacecraft guy has ever geared up became the German Helios II, at 70 km according to 2d. At that fee it may take 18 000 years to get to Alpha Centauri, yet, it became merely going that at as quickly as via a image voltaic gravitational help and could decelerate because it travelled far flung from the sunlight. different technologies have been examined like ion propulsion and nuclear propulsion. Ion propulsion became easily used to potential a spacecaft which i think of investigated an asteroid. It has an exceedingly sluggish acceleration yet over large distances it ought to alter into quite quickly. Nuclear propulsion became experimented with in a floor finding out facility some years in the past (50's and 60's probable) yet has long been decommissioned. There are lots extra speculative technologies that have been researched slightly, like a spacecraft with a 'sail' that would use image voltaic gentle or laser gentle to propel it. it quite is complicated to declare how quickly those technologies ought to be waiting for any such undertaking, or how useful they could be. that's not consumer-friendly to declare how long it may take to get to the sting of the image voltaic device considering there is no real definition of the place it is. Spacecraft like the Voyagers and Pioneer have been mentioned to have left the image voltaic device, yet they're nowhere close to the hypothetical Oort Cloud it is known to embody us.
