There are two ways to qualify for the NFL playoffs - the first is to have the best overall win-loss record in your division over the course of the season. This is how eight of the twelve playoff teams will qualify - two conferences with four divisions (and thus four division winners) each.

There is a series of tie-breakers that are used if two teams in the same division end the season with an identical win-loss record - inter-division record, head-to-head record, and record against common opponents.

The second way is to get in is as what is called a "wild card" team. These are the two non-division-winning teams in each conference with the best records.

For example, let's look at the 2006 season's final standings in the National Football Conference (NFC):

NFC EAST
Philadelphia 10-6-0
Dallas 9-7-0
NY Giants 8-8-0
Washington 5-11-0

NFC NORTH
Chicago 13-3-0
Green Bay 8-8-0
Minnesota 6-10-0
Detroit 3-13-0

NFC SOUTH
New Orleans 10-6-0
Carolina 8-8-0
Atlanta 7-9-0
Tampa Bay 4-12-0

NFC WEST
Seattle 9-7-0
St. Louis 8-8-0
San Francisco 7-9-0
Arizona 5-11-0

Philadelphia, Chicago, New Orleans, and Seattle each had the best record in their conference, and so they each advanced as division winners.

At 9-7-0, Dallas had the best record among teams who did not win their division, and were granted a wild card. This left several teams with 8-8-0 records. Among those teams, the NY Giants had the best record against their own division opponents, and so they were given the second wild card spot.

Im guessing it the Colts without observing something. it form of sounds like they have very practically gained 10 or extra advantageous video games and qualified for the playoffs each and every 12 months Manning has been the QB. they're the only team i'm going to think of of of that didnt have atleast some quite undesirable years for the period of that element. i think of of the Colts in consumer-friendly phrases had one dropping season for the period of that complete era.
