you might have the dishwasher hose connected to the throat of the disposer under the sink, and the hose may be plugged. remove this hose and run the dishwasher into a bucket.

Generally speaking, the dish washer empties into the garbage disposal. You're correct in that. It sounds like you're going to get to have a fun gross time with this one. Here we go:

Get under the sink and you'll see two hoses coming out of the side of the garbage disposal. One goes to the air gap on top of your sink (that weird thing that doesn't do anything to the right of your faucet). The bottom hose goes to the drain. You'll need to disconnect that. It should be held in place with hose clamps. Turn the little screws on the metal rings until the rings loosen up and pull the hose off.

OK, now that it's loose, wipe the nasty water off your face. You've got two choices from here: either replace the hose or cleaning it. You can take the hose to the store and they'll match it. You can also take a wire coat hanger and bend the end just a bit and push it through the hose. Do this over the toilet. I'm not kidding.

Once the line is clear, reattach and run the water. Then tighten that hose clamp that is leaking.

My first step would be to disconnect the trap (U-shaped pipe on back side of disposal) and empty it out. Sounds like it is clogged and not allowing water to drain.
