Get a head start on serious reading for school/college and life. "Ethan Frome" by Edith Wharton is an astounding novel, easy enough to read for the reading itself, let alone the societal message it was meant to convey.
"Jane Eyre" is very old fashioned but an easy read; Dickens novels are always entertaining. For a head start on Jane Eyre, there was a recent Masterpiece Theatre presentation worth watching, then read the original; Dickens' Bleak House was also on MT last year and sent me to the bookshelf for a re-read.
I'm not sure what they are reading in high school literature these days; certainly Steinbeck (Of Mice and Men; Grapes of Wrath) are good books. Although I'm not a Hemingway fan, perhaps someone can recommend a few Hemingway titles.
Keep on reading ... look for dead 20th century authors who are still in print. If their books are published 20 years after they are gone, you will gain more from the reading than an afternoon escape.

I was 14 when I first ventured reading novels of significance, instead of reading all those children's books with the cheesy endings that are simply plot driven and are adroed for that. The first "classic" I read was 1984 by George Orwell...it really opened my mind as I became aware of the true potential reading a great book has.

If you like Fantasy, Robin Hob is an awesome writer. She's got multiple series. The one to start with would be the Farseer series. It's a little bit of Fantasy mixed in with Court Intruige.

Deffinately go for the Twilight series. It is romantic, and also is fantacy. I've read all three that came out, and they are amazing!
They are:
1.Twilight
2.New Moon
3.Eclipse
Another good reason why you should read them is that they are in the process of making a movie.
Trust me, you will absolutely love them. I got my friends hooked, and hopefully you as well!
