When did ordinary Americans stop wearing gunbelts and why?

Come to Texas and you may still see a few. Most are shoulder holsters where you cannot see the gun. I believe they stopped when the automobile arrived. Grandpa carried a shotgun in the wagon. That is a wagon hitched to two horses in the late 1800's.

Have you ever seen a Texas Ranger? Even cowboys still carry guns to shoot rattle snakes or just for protection out on the range.

I would say that the carrying of weapons for "all the honest World to see." finally fell out around 1930's and 1940's

The 'old west' era most associated only really existed in America between the end of Civil War and the start of WWI

and that had alot to do with Cowboys (needing to protect themselves form wild animals) or people hoping to pass as Cowboys and robbing people, or the Law Enforcers needing to stop the criminals

post WWI into the 30's and 40's Federal agents and the Mobsters they tried to control, also packed heat, but by this time the weapon of choose was the Tommy Gun which was too big for a holster but one assumes most people on either side of the issue still had side arms

but I don't think it was ever as prevailent as the practice of carrying a sword in Victorian England, but those who did no doubt were trying to envoke that sensibility with the newer technology of the hand gun

Most Americans did not wear gunbelts. Only some in the west did. Even most of the people in west did not wear them. It was mostly law enforcement, outlaws, and travelers (such as cattle drivers, courrie riders, other people that would be targets of the outlaws).

They stopped wearing them in the 1890s when law and order was established through out the west.

Also, today, police and law enforcement officers still wear gunbelts... so in a way, we still do wear them.
