You might be able to spray thinner epoxy formulations and build up the coverage on the Styrofoam. Spreading thick putty will probably break down the structure of the Styrofoam.

His suggestion is completely valid in that the substance of the mix in Epoxy might degrade the Styro. They are not the same.

That said, and without knowing at all your intent, or the TYPE of Cellular foam you have in mind, you can apply substances to Denser foam products, that may not be seriously degraded by Expoxy resin and it's catalyst. I suspect TESTING the different materials might offer you answers.

In Theater I often use a product tagged FOAMCOTE? (SP) that acts as a safe, non damaging coating for the large cell, often white, Styro. Once applied it could be a barrier you need?
