The hardest part is to get it burning. There are cans that hold the coals and can be used to start the can full of charcoal going so you can spread it out. Some people use an electric heat starter on the spread out coals. Some use a chemical starter (which needs to burn off completely). Some use a propane torch. No one in their right mind uses gasoline.

Light your charcoal using any variety of methods except gasoline or any other motor type fuel. Mounding it is a good way to get it started. When it turns gray, spread it out evenly and cook your food. If it is something like a whole chicken or turkey, pile the coals around the outside of the grill so the bottom does not burn.

Wow, some amazing answers... blow drier... wow
Place your charcoal in a little pyramid. If you used charcoal designed to be lit by match go ahead and light in in a few places. Allow it to burn until all charcoals are engulfed. Cover it, the flames will go out and charcoal will get hotter and hotter (red). When looks like all of them are nice and glowing red, spread the charcoal in a single layer, drop your stakes, cover it and adjust amount of air through the vent holes. Bon Apettit
