If wiggling and jiggling the steering wheel doesn't do it then try to wiggle and jiggle the transmission lever. And if that doesn't work then try to rock the car forward and backwards a couple times to make sure it is "locked" in park if an automatic. If it is parked on an incline don't stand on the down side of the car or you'll run yourself over if the tranny isn't locked in park completely.

If this doesn't work then it may be time for a new ignition lock. Most locksmiths can come out and do it on site unless you want to tow it in. This is about a $120 job if this is what's wrong.

Good Luck!

Dear friend, the car has a steering lock mechanism. Turn the steering a little bit to the left or right, while holding it in that position, insert the key.

If this does'nt work, put in a bit of oil on the key, don't pour in the ignition mechanism. Then try the key.

Check that you are using the right key.(This sounds dumb, sorry, but it happened to me once with my bike!!!)

If you fear for the safety of the car, let one person, eg. you be next to the car while the other gets a locksmith, or car guy.

Hope this helps.

Perhaps the steering wheel lock is on.Try wriggling the steering back and forth (gently) while at the same time insert the key into the ignition key.

tell him to make sure its in the right gear or in park all the way ,he may also want to take some wd-40 and spray this in to the lock assembly this may help him get the key in it,probably whats happened to it is the tumblers have got suck in it,wd-40 should make them release, and the key should work, good luck with it.
