Guns, like all tools, should be cleaned regularly. Really you should know that. The bore should gleam and the rifling should be clear of dirt and dust. The working parts should be regularly stripped cleaned and lightly oiled. If not, you could have a nasty accident. I suggest every two weeks at least.

If unused, in a dry place it should be
OK for months at a time.
It should be wiped and lightly oiled
occasionally and an oily patch pushed
through the bore. (Dry patch before use).
Stripping down is unnecessary unless
it's been used.

Lightly oil it inside and out once per year. Store it in a dry inside closet.
