Cesare Borgia was the son of Pope Alexander VI by his long-time mistress, Vannozza dei Cattanei. He had two brothers, Gioffre and Giovanni, and a sister, Lucrezia.

The portrait by Altobello Melone depicts a devilishly handsome figure, emphasis on the "devilishly."

He was intended for what you might call the family business--he was named Bishop of Pamplona at 15. His great-uncle, Alonso Borgia (the Borgias were originally from Spain), was Bishop of Valencia prior to being elected Pope (he took the name of Callixtus III) in 1455, and, as previously mentioned, Rodrigo, his father, also ascended the Papal throne. Alexander VI was the first Pope to openly acknowledge his irregularly begotten children.

Cesare was made a cardinal at the age of 18, but resigned this position in 1498. He pursued a military career and married a princess of Navarre, Charlotte d'Albret. There was one daughter born of this marriage, and he also fathered at least 11 children out of wedlock.

He was admired by Machiavelli, in spite of his harshness and cruelty, and his power waned after the short tenure of Pius III, successor to his father.

He died at the age of 31.

I believe he was either the father or brother of Lucretia Borgia who got the blame for obeying their orders. Lucretia was a dutiful daughter. She married the man her father picked out, then just as quickly left him when her father picked out someone better and more powerful. That marriage was annulled, I think. For some reason an annulment wouldn't work for the second husband so she was ordered to poison him. She did it. Don't remember what happened with the third.

Her father was also the Pope. Of course, she'd obey him.
