I understand that it means it's a big game but how can it be a 6 pointer if you only get 3 points for a win?

it means 2 teams in relegation battle plays one another. the team that wins that match will win 3 points, whereas the team that loses, drops a potential 3 points. it works at the top of the table as well.

basically, you have to take the games in hand into consideration, and the maximum potential points both teams can take. so when they meet one another, the points loss/gained will cause this "6-point" effect, because they both have lost that game of potentially earning them points.

confusing?
- to put it in another way; a team winning, gaining the 3 points in the game where they also prevent their opponents (be it relegation, mid table or top) from getting 3 points.

ie. team wins gets +3 points. team that gets beaten 3 points dropped. so thats the 6 point difference.

At the end of the season the bottom 2-3 teams get sent down a division. This is called relegation. 6 pointer is a term used because you win you get 3 and your opponent looses the chance to get 3.

3 + 3= 6

Relegation 6 pointer means that the two teams playing are bad and are trying to stay in their division. If one team wins it is extra special because they may leap frog from 18th to 17th and out of being sent down to the lower division for the weekend anyway.

IT'S A 6 POINT GAME BECAUSE THE WINNER GETS 3 AND THE LOSER LOSES 3. HENCE A 6 POINT GAME.
