I have a 83 yamaha maxim. recently it stopped starting. now it starts everytime, but won't idle properly. it revs up to 3000 and holds there. if i try to put it in first, it cuts off. and won't even let me shift between gears.

if the bike is doing this warmed up, u have a carburator boot(s) leaking and sucking air. otherwise, u have the idle speed set too high, or u have added a throttle lock and the throttle isnt snapping back to full idle. check ur plugs....a bad plug will keep it from starting easy.

It sounds like your idle setting is too high. since this just started, check the throttle cables. if they are binding or sticking, this may be the cause of the high revs of the engine. on a bike that old, you probably need to lubricate the throttle cables, or replace them. Also, check the adjustment of the cable. if the adjuster has vibrated out, it may be holding the throttle open. I recently repaired a friends bike with this same problem. The reason it dies when you try to shift is due to the high rpms.

How does it stall? Does it turn off like a swap, immediately, or does it style of stutter and stall. If it turns off like a swap, that's the sidestand swap. If it stumbles till it stops, sounds like your grab is dragging. The backfire is a crimson herring. only sounds like extra gas is gathering jointly as that's faltering and then burns up while the working resumes. only commence backing the grab off. you in basic terms have some thing adjusted incorrectly, your intentions to revert to the unique settings aside.
