The 20 gallon is fine for a young bp. You need an under tank heater and a thermostat to plug it into to regulate the temp. A large bowl of water he can get into to soak. Two hiding places to crawl under--one on warm side, one on cool side. Aspen bedding 2 inches thick. Various branches, fake plants. A lid with a tightly closing screen top and good locks on it--they can push open a lid very easily and escape. Frozen mice of the appropriate size for age/size of snake. Here are some good websites on care.

Oh heaven... This should have been done first, friend. BUt often those captivate your hearts in the pet store so much that you need to bring them home without knowing what you need.

Fortunately, you picked a "forgiving" pet. A 20 gal is OK now. Get him a container to soak in, change the water daily, get him hides, branches, driftwood... "Michael's" is a hobby store that often has silk plants and plastic decor for peanuts!

They don't really need lights, but for warmth during the day you can get an incandescent bulb. I just keep my cornsnake on a heat mat, and I've had him three years now.

Make sure you give him a gradient, so if it gets too hot, he can move elsewhere. Get him some frozen mice, avoid feeding him live ones unless they're toothless babies. My snake even eats my cockatiels' infertile eggs...

Clean off the poopi when you see it, give the tank a good cleanup every month. And handle him a lot, even when you watch TV. By the way, they're escape artists so make sure you lock that lid on the tank...

Enjoy your new pet...

My advice is to go research them on the Internet. Go to a snake pet website and it has ALL the answers! Believe me, I went through an "I want a Ball Python" stage.

I was told not to have lights, as the snake could burn itself and will be unaware of the harm it causes to its body. Use a heating pad, but this means checking the heating settings all the time. There also has to be a cool side and a hot side in the tank so the snake can regulate its temperature.

Feed it with rats or mice. Pinkies are for small or baby snakes, then fuzzies and finally proper full grown food. You can either buy them live- Although the snake may injure itself when feeding if the prey strikes back. Or you can buy frozen packed food- which sounds disgusting and I don't think you want frozen rats in your fridge!

But like I said I'm no expert so please research before you go any further! =)

Any snake could be a cannibal, and we won't consistently anticipate the situations which will reason that. some species are commonplace for it, yet even perfect here on Yahoo i've got seen a minimum of two human beings interior the final month disillusioned that their ball pythons are ingesting one yet another. between that, rigidity-correct immunosuppression (snakes are solitary, being caught jointly is stressful) and parasite themes there is not any good reason to *ever* abode multiple snakes jointly. Assuming, of direction, you're no longer attempting to reproduce them. Your chum quite needs to get yet another tank and separate out the the rest 2. the potential of an get away is there, of direction. So, take a flashlight and consider under each thing. quite darkish spots (under the refrigerator or range). they might get everywhere. one in all my rosy boas have been given out and replaced into hiding in my bookshelf at one factor... save looking, possibly sit down out a thawed mouse someplace and save a watch on it from a distance (if the snake hasn't eaten in a whilst). i wish, for his or her sake, that this is an escapee and not a meal. good success looking her.
