A small amount, 1 rounded tablespoon per 5 gallons is beneficial. This is about half way to the salt content of "brackish" water. If you are going to use it, add it over a period of days to give the fish a chance to adjust. Catfish and loaches as well as other scaleless fish are very intolerant of salt. Perhaps 1 rounded teaspoon per 5 gallons. At such a low level, any health benefits are negligible. Do not use table salt, use aquarium salt.

Yes you can add salt to your guppies water. I'll tell you why:
Guppies, mollies, and platies live in tropical waters that is mixed with salt from the ocean. Therefore, putting some salt in their water would give them a longer lifespan and a healthier life.
You can buy aquarium salt at a petstore for about 1-3 dollars, depending on how big of a bag you get.
However, DON'T put too much salt in! Only put in about half a teaspoon, or a teaspoon for every 5 gallons. It will have instructions on the package.
OH YES! Aquarium salt is not necessary for guppies, but I do recommend it. I started using it for my guppies and mollies, and they already seem healthier! :D
Hope this helps!
Good luck!

Don't Listen to any of these people. I worked in an aquarium for 5 years. It is highly beneficial to add salt to a guppy tank as it is with all live-bearing fresh water fish such as mollies, platys and swordtails. Usually you want to add about 1 tablespoon per every 5 gallons of fresh water. Also, keeping the pH higher, around 7.4 to 7.6 will bring great success to your guppy tank, especially if you are trying to breed them.

No, not a necessity. Usually only a good idea to use salt when treating for ich, fungus, or nitrites present in the tank-for most fish.
