In terms of regression: The women of the 1960s and 70s, our mothers, etc. are a strong group of people, independent, ready to take the world by the horns. Talk to professors, feminists, psychiatrists, you can find many great women of that generation and even the ones who chose to be housewives often still have ideals.

Looking at todays girls, they are so aimless it is silly. There are some outstanding individuals, of course, but as a population? Pathetic. No ideas about life, politics, religion, education... just "getting by"

The way I see it, the feminists fought hard to get women opportunities that are just wasted by this generation. They fought for equality in education, but they didn't want you to sit around doing nothing. They fought for sexuality so you could share yourself with your lover as you saw fit and enjoy it, not so you could exploit men and be tramps with low self esteem.

How did such strong mothers and good role models end up with such useless daughters in the end?

The way I see it, feminists worked hard to enjoy great success - both socially and economically. With both mother and father working for the first time in American history, the family made alot of money. Consequently, the children they raised got anything they wanted, because their parents felt guilty about spending so much time at work and not enough time at home baking cookies and playing catch with them.

The kids got just plain spoiled. If you are handed everything, you value nothing.

I love your question, and your thinking on the subject. But if I may, I think you have missed a generation - and in that generation lies your answer.

The useless generation of girls to which you refer was not raised by strong women and good role models. They were raised by the generation in between. This generation, picked up the torch passed on by their strong predecessors, and fueled that misunderstood torch with self help books like 'The Rules'. They learned the lessons about accomplishing whatever you wish from their mothers, but in such a materialistic driven era, what this particular generation of women wanted was MORE. They wanted to find rich men to fund their shopping sprees. They, then, gave birth to a generation of girls who learned that they had to look good, above all else, in order to find a suitable mate. So we now have this generation who believes that as long as they stay thin and have the perfectly highlighted hair, they too can land the right man. And they can have their own benefactors for shopping sprees and whatever else they desire.

God help us all with the offspring they will set free on our society...

wow...What a question! I don't believe the whole generation of girls is useless - there are a lot of smart, young girls out there today, and hopefully a few will take you to task for asking this! On the other hand, there does seem to be a part of this generation that seem to be more focused on what they look like than ever before..I don't think that having Paris Hilton, Lindsey Lohan and the like make for good role models. They have also grown up in an age of instant-everything, from food, to laptops, to cell phones and such...and you are right that parental guidance is much to blame.

That's what happens when a generation treats their girls like princesses. (they obviously aren't). When given the freedom to act like asses... they will. When bad examples flourish (Madonna, spears, cyrus and far to many 2 list) you get mean, rude, stupid, ignorant whores for examples on how to be a woman. They are naked /half naked cavewomen. Paris Hilton was tame in comparison to todays fowl females.

I truthfully blame lots of things including the media Paris Hilton technology and bratz because whether you like it or not some people Do idolize her, look at almost every girl on tv or a reality show you have 2-4 women with long blond hair side bangs, gucci and prada they look like her if you look at them closely and there are hundreds of them all around.Another thing is those Bratz dolls, Barbie woar makeup and barbie had boobs, but Bratz dolls have allot mre makeup and full figures than Barbie they dress promiscuously to show off trends to help benefit the fashion industry and they wear thongs. What good can come out of that?
We are not as independent anymore in the 50's being a housewife was not an option you were trained to learn how to clean, cook, sew exc and be the perfect housewife and take care of a man and your children. The man's role was to go to work all women had to do was grocery shopping, watch kids, clean exc.But we grew out of that phase and now in society it is almost impossible to be in a family with only one salary.Who even said that we wanted it all? no offnense to feminists. But i'm sure there were women who were happy staying home and doing all that stuff.Another thing to blame is technology, technology is great I love it but, it does everything for us making us less independant.
I hope this helped answer your question.

Somehow they got the best of patrialchy and feminism, they cannot be deprived of what patrialchy denied them because feminists will kick up a fuss,so they get what men get. However when it comes to handling responsibilities, they still are not being foisted upon what patrialchy foisted upon the men, because feminists are soo inert when it comes to accepting equal responsibilities. They may say they support the idea, like drafting for women, but beyond lip service they do nothing.Patrialchy being a mindset and not a specific group of people, cannot be targeted into changing their protocol, and hence the result is unequal burden.Men who grew up from boys get indoctrinated with these ideals and foolishly accept their accursed fate, while women grew up taking that privilege for granted. The flaw is in the existence of feminism, instead of an all round acting body to implement and ensure an overall equalness in treatment of the genders.Girls are literally forgiven for being useless, and if no one at large is calling them useless,it becomes the new accepted standards. While boys are constantly chatised and pressurised,so its either they have to shape up or live in shame.Between a boy and girl of equal competency, its almost likely that the girl will be living with greater dignity than the boy.All i can say is feminism needs to be replaced,or claiming victimhood will be a woman's ticket to an easy free lunch.

It's not just the girls, it's the whole generation. Sometimes I wish I could have been born 30 or 40 years ago...

I'm glad that you see the truth of the Sexual Revolution and the rest of feminism. Most everyone else here thinks the SR was all about encouraging promiscuity. Incorrect.

The way I see it, this generation of women grew up under the antifeminist backlash, so they either don't know, don't want to know, or don't care about how things used to be. No one is encouraging them to do anything more than look pretty, have a boyfriend, and maybe go to college if they have time (and rememebr to par-tay crazy!). As a 17-year-old feminist, I find this especially grievous.

The solution? The Feminine Mystique should be required reading for all female high-school juniors.

Strong mothers have to teach their children what their mothers taught them & being a good role model speaks volumes.
